Early Deficit Proves Too Much for Litchfield Softball in 5-2 Loss to Vandalia
Despite a dominant 12-strikeout performance in the circle by Aria Feeley, the Litchfield varsity softball team could not overcome an early deficit, falling 5-2 to Vandalia in Thursday’s non-conference home matchup.
Vandalia struck quickly, plating three runs in the top of the first inning to seize momentum. Mady McCall paced the visitors’ offense, finishing the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs to spark the early surge. Vandalia continually applied pressure on the basepaths, utilizing aggressive baserunning to rack up six stolen bases as a team, including two from Bella Walk. They added single runs in the third and fourth innings to steadily build a 5-1 advantage.
In the circle for Litchfield, Feeley settled in after a difficult first inning and delivered a stellar complete-game effort. Over seven innings of work, she struck out a staggering 12 Vandalia batters while issuing just three walks. She allowed eight hits and five runs, though uncharacteristic defensive struggles behind her—totaling three Litchfield errors—meant only three of those runs were earned.
Offensively, Litchfield was stifled by Vandalia starting pitcher Katy Sefton, who threw a complete-game one-hitter. Feeley recorded Litchfield’s lone hit of the afternoon. However, despite the quiet bats, Litchfield consistently found ways to put the ball in play and manufacture runs. Showing patience at the plate, Litchfield batters drew five walks and took advantage of five wild pitches by Sefton to generate offense.
Litchfield broke through for a run in the third inning and added another in the fifth. Molly Rimar and AJ Jarman each scored a run for the home team, while Kinley Hemken was credited with an RBI. Molly Rimar also provided a spark on the basepaths, swiping two stolen bases. Sefton ultimately limited the damage, stranding three Litchfield runners to secure the 5-2 victory for Vandalia.
