Hillsboro Offense Explodes in 17-1 Mercy-Rule Victory Over Litchfield

The Hillsboro varsity softball team unleashed a relentless offensive attack on Friday, securing a commanding 17-1 home conference victory over Litchfield. Fueled by a massive nine-run first inning and an eight-run fourth, Hillsboro ended the contest early via the mercy rule while backing up their explosive bats with stellar pitching.

Hillsboro set the tone the moment they stepped to the plate. The hosts erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the first inning, immediately putting Litchfield in a deep hole. The onslaught was powered by an aggressive approach at the plate and on the basepaths, as Hillsboro racked up 14 hits and eight stolen bases over just four innings of play.

Sophomore Kaya Connor provided the biggest blast of the afternoon, launching a home run and driving in two runs. Freshman G. Crayne was a constant threat, falling just a home run short of the cycle with a double, a triple, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Sophomores Lux Reynolds and Lainey Lessman also drove in three runs apiece, while junior Briley Kirby wreaked havoc on the bases with three steals and three runs scored.

While the Hillsboro lineup was relentless, Lessman was equally dominant in the pitcher’s circle. The sophomore right-hander tossed all four innings, striking out seven Litchfield batters while allowing just one earned run on four hits to earn the victory.

Litchfield found a brief spark in the top of the third inning. Emma Estell, who went 1-for-1 on the day, crossed the plate to score the visitors’ lone run. Charlie Bono, Madi Rimar, and Aria Feeley also recorded hits for Litchfield, but the offense could not piece together a sustained rally against Lessman. Feeley took the loss in the circle, battling through 3.1 innings against a red-hot Hillsboro lineup.

The game concluded in the bottom of the fourth inning when Hillsboro pushed across eight more runs, extending the lead past the 15-run threshold to trigger the run rule.
