Wernsing and Schmidt Strike as Litchfield Blanks Hillsboro 2-0 on the Road

HILLSBORO, Ill. — Litchfield got a goal from a senior at each end of its attacking group and a clean sheet from senior keeper Cooper Martin on Tuesday, riding a pair of second-half-style finishes to a 2-0 conference road win over Hillsboro on Oct. 6.

The Purple Panthers needed only two goals, and both came from the senior class. Landon Wernsing (Class of 2026) found the back of the net for one of Litchfield’s two scores, and Casson Schmidt (Class of 2026) accounted for the other. Fellow senior Chance Holliday picked up the lone assist of the match, setting up one of the two finishes and finishing with a point for his effort.

That was all the cushion Martin required. The senior goalkeeper turned in a shutout in the Litchfield net, taking the win and keeping the Hilltoppers off the board through the full 80 minutes. It marked a tidy defensive performance from a Litchfield back line that never allowed Hillsboro to pull level or force the Panthers into chasing the game.

For Hillsboro, sophomore goalkeeper Nolan Adams was tagged with the loss. The Hilltoppers kept the match within striking distance throughout — a two-goal margin left the door open deep into the night — but could not solve Martin at the other end.

The win came in conference play and on the road, two details that give the result added weight for Litchfield as the regular season winds toward postseason seeding.
