Wernsing and Johnson Each Score Three as Litchfield Blanks Taylorville 12-0

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. — Litchfield’s boys varsity soccer team needed little help from its goalkeeper and plenty of room on the scoresheet Wednesday, rolling to a 12-0 non-conference road win over Taylorville on Sept. 30.

Senior Landon Wernsing and junior Korbin Johnson each posted hat tricks for the Purple Panthers, combining for six of the goals accounted for in the box score. Wernsing added an assist to finish with a team-high seven points, while Johnson’s three goals gave him six.

The scoring was spread across the roster. Senior Will Wujek, sophomore Michael Wujek, senior Cooper Martin and junior Tanner Milkovich each found the net once, giving Litchfield six different goal scorers on the afternoon. Every shot credited to a Litchfield player in the box score resulted in a goal — Wernsing 3-for-3, Johnson 3-for-3, and single strikes from the Wujeks, Martin and Milkovich.

The buildup play was shared as well. Senior Brody Dykema, freshman Ian Birkenkamp and freshman Sam Mazza each picked up an assist, with Wernsing supplying the fourth. The underclassmen contributions stood out in a game where Litchfield rotated heavily and still kept the pressure on the Tornadoes.

At the other end, there was almost nothing to do. Freshman goalkeeper Emrik Witt was credited with one save in the shutout, the only shot on goal Taylorville managed to put on frame. The clean sheet capped a performance in which Litchfield controlled possession from the opening whistle and never allowed the Tornadoes a foothold.

Taylorville, playing at home, was unable to generate sustained offense and finished the match without a goal.
