Wernsing, Schmidt Each Score Twice as Litchfield Blanks Carlyle 7-0

LITCHFIELD, Ill. — Five different Litchfield players found the net and senior goalkeeper Cooper Martin never had to be rescued, as the Purple Panthers rolled past visiting Carlyle 7-0 in non-conference boys soccer action Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Litchfield’s senior class did the heavy lifting. Landon Wernsing (No. 19) turned in the most complete performance on the field, scoring twice and adding two assists for a six-point night. Casson Schmidt (No. 6) matched him on the scoresheet with a two-goal effort, and the Panthers’ finishing was brutally efficient — every shot on goal recorded in the box score ended up behind the Carlyle keeper.

Brody Dykema (No. 3) contributed a goal and an assist for three points, and fellow senior Tyler Belusko (No. 7) added a goal. Junior Jaxon Ray (No. 11) rounded out the scoring. Freshman Parker Calufetti (No. 4) and junior Korbin Johnson (No. 0) each picked up an assist, giving Litchfield four different players with a helper and underscoring how much of the damage came from build-up play rather than individual runs.

With seven goals spread across five scorers and five assists credited, Litchfield’s attack kept Carlyle’s back line chasing the ball from the opening whistle. The Indians, playing on the road, were unable to generate enough sustained pressure to test Martin, who earned the clean sheet and the shutout — his contribution to the night measured more by what never reached him than by anything he had to stop.

The result sends Carlyle home with a non-conference loss and gives the Purple Panthers a comfortable, controlled afternoon at home.
