Vickery’s 11 Kills Not Enough as Litchfield Falls in Three Sets at Metro-East Lutheran

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Amari Vickery hammered a match-high 11 kills and Leighton Warchol ran the offense for 20 assists, but Litchfield could not close out a third set on the road Monday, dropping a 2-1 non-conference decision to Metro-East Lutheran on Sept. 21.

The loss sends the Purple Panthers to 5-11 on the season. The Knights improved to 8-12 with the home win.

Litchfield had the pieces of a winning formula for most of the night. Vickery, a senior, averaged 3.7 kills per set and was the Panthers’ primary option from the outside, while Warchol’s 6.7 assists per set kept the offense moving in all three sets. Senior Lexi Logan added six kills as a secondary attacking threat, and junior Jada Carroll chipped in four more. In all, Litchfield put down 25 kills on the night.

The trouble came in the margins. The Panthers were charged with 21 attack errors across the match — nine from Vickery, six from Logan — and tacked on seven service errors, a combination that repeatedly handed momentum back to Metro-East Lutheran at points when Litchfield was building rhythm.

Defensively, senior libero Kyndal Law was busy from the first serve to the last. Law led the team with 12 digs (4.0 per set) and took on the bulk of the serve-receive responsibility, handling 18 receptions. Logan backed her up with eight digs, while Vickery contributed 12 receptions and two digs in a full-rotation shift.

At the net, sophomore Kyleigh Zhang recorded a team-best two solo blocks, with Carroll and Vickery each adding one as Litchfield finished with four total blocks.

The Panthers’ serving produced three aces, two of them from Vickery and one from junior Samantha Rieke, who also added five receptions and two digs. Senior Rylee Hamm saw action in two sets and converted two kills.

With the match knotted after two sets, Litchfield had its chance to steal a road win in the decider but could not string together the stretch of clean possessions it needed. The Panthers return home looking to cut down on unforced errors as the back half of the schedule continues.
