Litchfield Erases Six-Run Deficit with Massive Sixth Inning to Stun Gillespie 11-6
The Litchfield varsity baseball team staged an incredible late-game comeback on Friday, erupting for 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a six-run deficit and stun conference rival Gillespie 11-6 on their home diamond.
For the first five innings, the game belonged entirely to Gillespie (25-26). The visitors took absolute control in the top of the second inning, stringing together a massive six-run frame. The offensive outburst was punctuated by a crushing home run off the bat of Braden Reich, who drove in four runs on the play. L. Schuckenbrock added an RBI single, while C. Hailstone contributed a double to help build a commanding 6-0 advantage.
Following the second-inning explosion, Gillespie’s pitching staff deployed a carousel of relievers to keep the Litchfield bats completely silent. A committee consisting of D. Lancaster, Brayden Enslow, Brody Shaw, and Braden Reich each tossed a scoreless frame, maintaining the shutout and holding Litchfield without a run through five complete innings.
However, the momentum violently shifted in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 6-0 and down to their final six outs, Litchfield’s lineup finally broke through against Gillespie’s bullpen—and they did so in historic fashion. Litchfield relentlessly strung together hits, drew crucial walks, and capitalized on a defensive miscue to keep the line moving.
Gillespie reliever C. Hailstone bore the brunt of the onslaught, surrendering eight earned runs on seven hits in his 1.1 innings of work. Collin Griffith also struggled to stop the bleeding, yielding three unearned runs while walking two in his short appearance. By the time the dust settled on the frame, Litchfield had plated a staggering 11 runs on eight combined hits, completely flipping the script to take an 11-6 lead.
Despite committing two errors earlier in the contest, Litchfield’s defense clamped down in the top of the seventh. They retired the Gillespie side without incident to seal the improbable, come-from-behind conference victory.
