Flawless Defense, Third-Inning Rally Lift Litchfield Past Staunton 3-2
Clean defense and opportunistic baserunning proved to be the difference-makers on Wednesday, as the Litchfield varsity baseball team capitalized on a flurry of Staunton fielding miscues to secure a 3-2 home conference victory.
Despite being outhit by Staunton’s pitching staff, Litchfield played a spotless game in the field with zero errors, frustrating a Staunton squad that committed five costly mistakes. Those errors ultimately decided the tight conference clash, rendering all three of Litchfield’s runs unearned.
Staunton drew blood early, scratching across a run in the top of the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead. They added another run in the top of the third inning to extend their advantage to 2-0. Senior Matt Overby was the engine for the Staunton offense, driving in both of the team’s runs on the day with a hit and a sacrifice fly.
However, the bottom of the third inning flipped the script. Litchfield’s offense pressured the Staunton defense, leading to a crucial breakdown. Benefiting from the errors, Litchfield rallied to plate three runs off Staunton starting pitcher Cale Dugger, seizing a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish.
Staunton’s pitching tandem of Dugger and reliever Braylen Brown performed admirably despite the tough luck behind them. Dugger took the hard-luck loss, striking out six batters and allowing four hits over four innings of work without surrendering a single earned run. Brown was lights-out in relief, tossing three hitless and scoreless innings while striking out five to keep Staunton within striking distance.
Despite the strong effort on the mound and aggressive baserunning that yielded four stolen bases—including two by Brown—Staunton could not overcome its defensive woes. Litchfield’s pitching and perfectly executed defense held firm through the final four frames to shut the door and seal the 3-2 win.
