Weirich’s Two-Way Dominance Propels Jersey Softball to 10-0 Shutout Over Litchfield

The Jersey varsity softball team fired on all cylinders Wednesday afternoon, cruising to a 10-0 run-rule victory over Litchfield in a non-conference home matchup. Combining a relentless 12-hit offensive attack with flawless pitching and defense, Jersey overwhelmed the visitors to end the contest in just five innings.

Sophomore standout Paxton Weirich led the charge for Jersey both in the circle and at the plate. As the starting pitcher, Weirich was masterful, tossing four scoreless innings while scattering three hits and striking out six to earn the win. At the plate, she was equally dominant, finishing a perfect 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs.

Jersey took control of the game immediately. In the bottom of the first inning, the home team capitalized on Litchfield’s defensive miscues to push across three early runs. Litchfield, burdened by three errors on the day, struggled to contain Jersey’s aggressive lineup. Six of the ten runs surrendered by Litchfield starter Alexis Mielke were unearned.

The offensive pressure continued steadily as Jersey tacked on a single run in the second inning and another in the third. Holding a comfortable 5-0 lead, the Panthers broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth. Sending a parade of hitters to the plate, Jersey erupted for a five-run frame to put the mercy rule into effect.

Offensively, the Panthers saw production from top to bottom. Sophomore Holly Brainerd anchored the lineup with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, driving in a run and scoring once. Junior Anna Kribs provided a spark with a two-hit day that included a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Junior Maleah Derrick also tallied two hits and crossed the plate three times.

While Jersey’s offense hummed, Litchfield struggled to find gaps in the Panthers’ defense. Chloe Green provided the lone bright spot for the visitors, recording a perfect 2-for-2 outing that included a double. Alexis Mielke and Aria Feeley each added a hit, but Litchfield ultimately stranded five baserunners against Jersey’s pitching.

In the top of the fifth, Brainerd entered in relief of Weirich to slam the door. The sophomore struck out the side, working around a walk and a hit to preserve the combined shutout and finalize the 10-0 victory.
