Civic Memorial’s Six-Run Fourth Inning Sinks Litchfield 7-5

A disastrous mid-game defensive lapse proved too costly to overcome for the Litchfield varsity softball team, as they fell 7-5 to non-conference visitor Civic Memorial on Tuesday afternoon. Despite out-hitting the Eagles and building an early advantage, a massive six-run fourth inning completely flipped the script in favor of the visitors.

Litchfield established control in the opening frames, playing sound situational softball to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. They doubled their advantage in the third, pushing across another run to go up 2-0. Starting pitcher Alexis Mielke was dealing early for the Purple Panthers, holding the Eagles scoreless through the first three innings while allowing just one hit.

However, the game turned upside down in the top of the fourth. Civic Memorial’s offense suddenly awakened, capitalizing on a string of defensive miscues by Litchfield. The Eagles erupted for six runs in the frame, chasing Mielke from the circle and tagging reliever Aria Feeley to take a commanding 6-2 lead. On a tough afternoon defensively, Litchfield committed six errors, resulting in four unearned runs for the Eagles.

Despite the sudden deficit, Litchfield showed significant resilience. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Panthers pieced together a three-run rally to instantly pull back within a single run, cutting the Civic Memorial lead to 6-5. Alexis Mielke paced the Litchfield offense, going 2-for-3 with a double. Chloe Green, Madi Rimar, and Camie Stump all delivered crucial RBIs during the contest to keep the hosts in the fight.

Unfortunately for Litchfield, Civic Memorial’s Olivia Monroe was spectacular in the circle when it mattered most. The Eagles’ starter tossed a complete game, striking out nine batters while navigating around nine Litchfield hits and four defensive errors of her own. Monroe limited the damage after the fifth inning, and Civic Memorial manufactured a vital insurance run in the top of the seventh to seal the 7-5 victory.

Offensively for the Eagles, Monroe helped her own cause with a two-hit, one-RBI performance at the plate, while Zoey Hunt and Dakota Robinson also contributed two hits apiece to the winning effort.
