Alton Capitalizes on Late Errors to Defeat Litchfield 6-1 in Extra Innings

The Litchfield varsity softball team suffered a tough-luck loss on Monday afternoon, falling 6-1 to non-conference visitor Alton in an eight-inning battle. Despite a heroic, complete-game effort in the circle from Alexis Mielke, a string of late defensive miscues ultimately unraveled the Purple Panthers’ early lead.

For the first six innings, the game was a classic pitchers’ duel. Mielke was masterful for Litchfield, keeping the Alton lineup completely off balance. Litchfield broke the scoreless stalemate in the bottom of the third inning when Charlie Bono delivered a clutch RBI, driving in Molly Rimar to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

That narrow lead held until the top of the seventh inning. Needing just three outs to secure the victory, the Litchfield defense faltered. Alton managed to push across the tying run to force extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, the floodgates opened. Alton erupted for five runs in the frame to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Remarkably, due to six Litchfield errors committed throughout the contest, all six of Alton’s runs were unearned.

Mielke took the hard-luck loss despite a stellar individual performance. The workhorse pitcher tossed all eight innings and threw 129 pitches, allowing eight hits and zero earned runs while striking out eight batters and issuing just two walks.

Offensively, Litchfield struggled to find a rhythm against the Alton pitching staff, managing just four hits on the afternoon. Kinley Hemken was a bright spot, reaching base perfectly in all three of her plate appearances with a hit, two walks, and a stolen base. Charlie Bono, Marissa Bono, and Madi Rimar tallied the remaining hits for the Panthers, who will look to clean up their defense before their next outing.
