Mielke Strikes Out Nine, But Defensive Miscues Cost Litchfield Softball in 7-1 Loss to Taylorville

Despite a strong nine-strikeout performance in the circle from Alexis Mielke, the Litchfield varsity softball team was undone by defensive miscues in a 7-1 home non-conference loss to Taylorville on Tuesday afternoon.

Mielke brought her best stuff to the rubber, tossing a complete game and keeping the Taylorville hitters guessing for much of the afternoon. Over her seven innings of work, she racked up nine strikeouts and surrendered just two walks. However, the Litchfield defense struggled behind her, committing four errors that ultimately led to four unearned runs crossing the plate.

Taylorville set the tone early, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and adding two more in the third to build a 4-0 advantage. P. DeMichael was the catalyst for the visitors, making an impact both at the plate and in the circle. Offensively, DeMichael went a sparkling 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored. Taylorville utilized extra-base hits to inflict damage throughout the lineup, with Carsen Corzine and Grace Rogers also ripping triples to drive in runs.

In the circle, DeMichael was equally dominant. She kept Litchfield’s bats quiet, throwing a complete game and allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out five. DeMichael did not allow an earned run over her 88-pitch outing.

Litchfield finally broke through to erase the shutout in the bottom of the sixth inning. Charlie Bono sparked the offense, recording a hit, stealing a base, and eventually coming around to score the Panthers’ lone run.

Aria Feeley was a bright spot in the Litchfield lineup, putting together a solid 2-for-3 performance at the plate to lead the team in hits. Meanwhile, Chloe Green wreaked havoc on the basepaths, reaching base and utilizing her speed to tally an impressive three stolen bases.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, Taylorville responded with a three-run surge in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
