Massive Second Inning Propels Athens Past Litchfield, 10-4

The Litchfield varsity softball team jumped out to an early lead on Friday, but a massive eight-run second inning by visiting Athens proved too much to overcome in a 10-4 non-conference loss.

Litchfield struck first, capitalizing on early momentum to plate two runs in the bottom of the first inning. However, Athens answered decisively in the top of the second. The visitors’ offense erupted for eight runs, batting through the order to completely flip the script and seize an 8-2 advantage. Litchfield showed resilience, immediately battling back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 8-4, but that was as close as the hosts would get.

Athens tactically extended their lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings, providing a comfortable cushion for starting pitcher M. Ratliff. Ratliff settled in beautifully after the second inning, throwing a complete game to earn the victory. She scattered nine hits over seven innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out eight Litchfield batters.

Offensively, Jaci Derringer was the standout performer for Athens, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs to anchor the second-inning outburst. Emma Crispen and Reilen Reynolds each added multi-hit games, picking up two hits apiece to keep the pressure on the Litchfield defense.

For Litchfield, Charlie Bono and Marissa Bono paced the lineup with two hits each. Marissa Bono also drove in a run, while Camie Stump added an RBI single. Alexis Mielke took the loss in the circle for Litchfield, pitching all seven innings and striking out five while navigating a potent Athens lineup.
