NOKOMIS — Items resembling a pipe bomb were removed from an abandoned residence in Nokomis and analyzed as non-explosive following a search that ran from the evening of Aug. 11 into the morning of Aug. 12, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said.

Information that a possible explosive device or devices were inside the abandoned residence, near Shane Cole Park, was received through the Nokomis Police Department, according to the sheriff’s office.

An investigation by Nokomis police, the sheriff’s office, the Secretary of State Police Bomb Squad and the FBI led to a search warrant obtained through the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, the sheriff’s office said. A perimeter was established around the residence and neighbors were advised to evacuate their homes or shelter in place.

The bomb squad and the FBI then searched the exterior and interior of the property, according to the sheriff’s office. Items resembling a “pipe bomb” were removed from the residence, analyzed and deemed to be non-explosive. No explosive devices or explosive material were located on the property, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office thanked affected residents, as well as Nokomis police, the bomb squad, the FBI, Montgomery County EMA, Montgomery County State’s Attorney Brian Shaw, and Nokomis Fire and Ambulance.

The sheriff’s office did not report any arrest or charge in connection with the search.
