LITCHFIELD — The Litchfield City Council on Thursday, July 16, 2026, approved a tourism grant to Embrace the Lake in an amount not to exceed $1,000 to promote the organization’s Lake Lou Yaeger 60th Anniversary Celebration, scheduled for Aug. 29, 2026.

Alderperson Josh Hughes made the motion, seconded by Alderperson Sara Zumwalt. According to the packet, the Tourism Advisory Committee reviewed the application under grant guidelines requiring that awards provide matching funds to groups, organizations and nonprofits promoting projects that increase tourism’s economic impact, overnight stays and visibility of the city’s attractions. Because this is the organization’s first event, it is eligible for matching funds of up to 60% of total marketing expenditures, capped at $1,000; the event’s total advertising budget is $1,700. Funding will not be awarded until after the event takes place and all required documentation is submitted, and all promotional material must first be approved by the Tourism Office. “Lake Lou — 60 years. That’s a big deal,” Mayor Jacob Fleming said, noting the celebration is competing for attention with America’s 250th anniversary events. “Mark your calendars for August 29th.” He described Embrace the Lake as a wonderful nonprofit organization doing great things for the lake, and encouraged residents interested in beautifying and caring for the lake to attend its meetings.

A speaker at the meeting said the organization meets this coming Wednesday and that a rundown of the day’s events — including at least one band, food trucks, crafts and giveaways — should be available within the next week. The motion carried unanimously on a roll call of Alderpersons Sisson, Zumwalt, Huffman, Hughes and Garcia.
