Vandalia Edges Litchfield 3-2 in Back-and-Forth Conference Clash

A go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference on Friday afternoon as the Vandalia varsity softball team secured a hard-fought 3-2 conference victory over visiting Litchfield.

The matchup was a classic pitcher’s duel that featured answering rallies and tight defensive play. Litchfield (25-26) drew first blood in the top of the third inning. Charlie Bono, who consistently sparked the visitors’ offense, crossed the plate to give Litchfield a 1-0 edge. However, Vandalia (25-26) immediately responded in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game 1-1 to reset the momentum.

The pattern repeated in the fifth inning. Bono scored her second run of the day to briefly put Litchfield back in front, 2-1, but the Vandalia lineup answered right back in the home half, pushing a run across to knot the score at 2-2.

The hosts finally broke the stalemate in the bottom of the sixth, executing at the plate to secure the decisive 3-2 advantage. Vandalia’s defense, which played flawless, error-free softball behind starting pitcher Briley Sefton, locked down Litchfield in the seventh to seal the win.

Sefton earned the complete-game victory in the circle, navigating through seven innings while allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. She struck out six batters and worked around four walks. Sefton also helped her own cause at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Elaina Hagy was the offensive standout for Vandalia, turning in a perfect 3-for-3 performance that included a double, an RBI, and a run scored. K. Yarbrough also collected a pair of hits and an RBI, while Bella Walk launched a triple and scored a run.

Despite a dominant pitching performance, Alexis Mielke took a tough-luck loss for Litchfield. Mielke carved up the Vandalia lineup, racking up nine strikeouts over six innings of work. She scattered nine hits and allowed three runs, but only one of those runs was earned due to two costly Litchfield errors.

At the plate, Charlie Bono led Litchfield with a 2-for-3 day, adding a double, a walk, and two runs scored. Aria Feeley matched Bono with two hits of her own, and Mielke contributed an RBI single in the narrow defeat.
