Early Offense, Kolesar’s Complete Game Propel Staunton Past Litchfield, 3-1

A strong pitching performance from freshman Carly Kolesar and a capitalization on early defensive miscues helped the Staunton varsity softball team secure a 3-1 road victory over Litchfield on Tuesday afternoon.

Staunton jumped out to an immediate lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and adding an insurance run in the second. Those early tallies proved to be all the run support Kolesar would need. The freshman right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out five to earn the victory.

Litchfield pitcher Aria Feeley was handed a tough-luck loss despite a sterling effort in the circle. Feeley went the distance, effectively pitching to contact and striking out four batters over her seven innings of work. Hampered by seven defensive errors from the Litchfield defense, all three of the runs Feeley surrendered were unearned.

Offensively, Staunton was paced by junior Izzy Janus, who drove in a run and smacked a double to help build the early lead. Freshman Avery Lamore and senior Grace Burris kept the pressure on Litchfield’s defense, with Burris adding a double of her own to the visitors’ tally.

Litchfield broke through in the bottom of the third inning. Charlie Bono sparked the offense and crossed the plate thanks to an RBI off the bat of Kinley Hemken, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Hemken, Charlie Bono, Marissa Bono, Camie Stump, and Feeley each collected hits for the hosts.

However, Kolesar settled in and shut Litchfield down over the final four frames. Navigating through the host’s lineup with precision, she trusted her defense—which turned in a relatively clean game with just three errors—to secure the final outs and seal the conference win.
