Litchfield Edges Southwestern 5-4 in Back-and-Forth Conference Clash

Despite a resilient offensive effort and a pair of rallies, the Southwestern varsity baseball team fell short against conference rival Litchfield, dropping a tight 5-4 home decision on Friday.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from the outset, defined by timely hitting and sudden momentum shifts. Southwestern struck first in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Litchfield quickly answered in the top of the third. The Piasa Birds regained a 2-1 advantage in the bottom half of the frame, relying on a balanced offensive attack that consistently put the ball in play.

Southwestern’s lineup tallied eight hits on the day, anchored by an outstanding performance from junior Reed Campbell. Campbell went 2-for-3 at the plate, ripping a pair of doubles, drawing a walk, and driving in a run. Sophomore Johnny Kunz was equally effective, collecting two hits, scoring twice, and driving in a run. Senior Blake Rimbey also contributed a double and scored a run for the hosts.

The decisive frame came in the top of the fifth when Litchfield’s offense erupted for three runs to take a 4-2 lead, powered by a pair of home runs that proved to be the difference-makers. Showing no signs of quit, Southwestern immediately responded in the bottom of the fifth. The Piasa Birds plated two runs, capitalizing on run-scoring opportunities from Ben Biciocchi and Carter Bacon to knot the game at 4-4.

Litchfield, however, manufactured what would stand as the game-winning run in the top of the sixth. Kunz, who started on the mound for Southwestern and took the tough-luck loss, battled through six innings of work. He allowed five earned runs on six hits, struck out two, and issued just one walk. Biciocchi provided stellar relief out of the bullpen, tossing a flawless final inning with two strikeouts to keep the Piasa Birds within striking distance, but the Southwestern offense was unable to mount a final rally.
