Illinois Quick Hits: Teachers union says CPS to bus students to rally

(The Center Square) – The Chicago Teachers Union says Chicago Public Schools leaders have agreed to transform the school day on May 1 to one focused on civic engagement, student voice and standing up to the White House.

CTU says CPS has agreed to provide buses for students and teachers to attend a rally at Union Park.

In addition, the public school system committed to having teacher-directed development days on future May Days.

ILLINOIS CONGRESSMAN: OPERATION MIDWAY BLITZ HURT SMALL BUSINESS

Illinois U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Schaumburg, has asked the U.S. Small Business Administration to launch an economic impact assessment of Operation Midway Blitz.

In a letter to SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler, Krishnamoorthi said the deployment of federal immigration law enforcement has driven a year-over-year revenue decline of 20% to 50% for many local enterprises, leading to reduced state and local tax revenues.

FORMER ILLINOIS HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER REMEMBERED

State government leaders are remembering former Illinois House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie, who died on Thursday at the age of 85.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in a social media post that Currie was a trailblazer who dedicated her life to public service. Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch said it is because of Currie that Illinois is a safe haven for reproductive rights.

Currie, D-Chicago, served in the Statehouse from 1979 to 2019.
