Litchfield Sweeps VCHS Invitational

The Litchfield track and field program put on a clinic in depth and balance on Tuesday, sweeping both the boys’ and girls’ team titles at the Vandalia Community High School (VCHS) Invitational.

The Litchfield boys tallied 62.5 points, holding off a strong push from runner-up Greenville (48.5) and host Vandalia (37). The Litchfield girls faced a much tighter team race but ultimately edged out Shelbyville with 55 points to secure the program sweep. Shelbyville (62 points) technically led the girls’ scoring through 16 completed events, but Litchfield’s dominance in the track and field events sealed their overall team success.

Litchfield’s boys controlled the relays and the middle-distance events. The 4×100 team of Brylan Marten, Alec Roach, Lukas Paine, and Jaxon Ray broke the tape in 45.0 seconds. The same foursome returned to capture the 4×200 relay in 1:33.5. Paine, Marten, and Roach later teamed with Dean Gibbs and Camron Zumwalt to win the 4×400 relay in 3:48.1. Gibbs also picked up an individual victory in the 800 meters (2:11.2).

In the field, Johnathon Bowles leaped a personal-best 12.60 meters to win the triple jump, adding to his earlier victory in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (41.7). Braedyn Knapp also came up huge for Litchfield, sweeping the heavy throws with an 11.57-meter shot put and a 33.87-meter discus hurl.

Greenville, the boys’ runner-up, found success across multiple events. Eli Neely won the 400 meters in 1:00.8, while Kody Provost paced the field in the 3200 meters (14:23.5). Trey Sugg added a victory in the high jump, clearing 5′ 8″.

Host Vandalia utilized the speed of Paddy McDowell to stay in the team race. McDowell won the 100 meters (11.4) and the 200 meters (23.6). Sam Bowers secured gold in the 110-meter hurdles (15.4), while Vandalia’s 4×800 relay squad of Javier Gutierrez, Ryker Emerick, Cole Durbin, and Nic Jackson crossed first in 9:32.0.

The girls’ competition was a dramatic back-and-forth battle between Litchfield and Shelbyville. Litchfield was powered by the phenomenal sprinting of freshman Lana Cress, who swept the 100 meters (12.7), 200 meters (27.9), and 400 meters (1:07.4). She also ran the opening leg of Litchfield’s winning 4×100 relay (52.9). Leighton Warchol added to the Litchfield point total with a victory in the 800 meters (2:33.7), while Ava White secured gold in the 300-meter hurdles (51.0).

Shelbyville countered with an overpowering presence in the high jump and distance events. Meredith Chambers cleared 5′ 0″ to win the high jump and leaped a personal-best 4.65 meters to take the long jump. Leah Shoaff added a victory in the 1600 meters (5:27.7), and Brynly Rice-Delgado set a personal record to win the 100-meter hurdles (17.3). Shelbyville also picked up relay wins in the 4×200 (2:02.3).

Vandalia’s Hannah Brown defended her home rings with a dominant throwing performance, sweeping the shot put with a season-best 11.88 meters and the discus with a 31.07-meter toss.
