Rochester Relays, Pontiac Hurdlers Shine at Plains Invitational
A deep and competitive field converged on Pleasant Plains High School on Saturday, April 11, for the boys’ Plains Invitational. With a wide array of talent across the sprint, distance, and field disciplines, the meet transformed into a showcase of individual brilliance and relay dominance, highlighted by a Rochester sprint relay sweep and a masterful hurdle performance from Pontiac’s Cesar Gutierrez.
Rochester controlled the baton exchanges all afternoon. The Spartans’ 4×100 squad set the tone with a winning time of 43.32, followed closely by a 1:30.81 victory in the 4×200 relay. They capped their day on the track with a decisive 3:28.90 finish in the 4×400 relay. Rochester’s success carried over into the field events, where Dylan Durocher captured the shot put title with a toss of 15.68 meters, and Khordell Gregory leaped 12.16 meters to win the triple jump.
Pontiac also made a massive impact, particularly in the technical events. Cesar Gutierrez was untouchable over the barriers, executing a clean sweep of the hurdles. He took the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.89 and followed it up with a 39.79 finish in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. Pontiac added a pair of field victories courtesy of Logan McCabe, who cleared 4.49 meters to win the pole vault, and Hunter Christenson, who took the long jump with a 6.59-meter leap.
Defending their home track, the Pleasant Plains boys turned in a stellar all-around showing. Kadyn Harmony secured gold in the 200-meter dash in 22.14, while Nathan Frey established a personal-best time of 50.39 to win the 400 meters. Elijah Teefey brought the home crowd to its feet in the distance events, winning the 1600 meters in a season-best 4:31.80.
Rock Island’s distance runners proved too much for the pack to handle. Steven Hernandez outlasted the field to win the 800 meters with a personal-best 2:04.70, and Elliot Batz dominated the 3200 meters, crossing the finish line in a personal-best 9:23.76.
Other notable performances included Litchfield’s Alec Roach blazing to an 11.09 to win the 100-meter dash, while the Litchfield 4×800 relay team outpaced the field to take gold in 9:23.73. St. Joseph-Ogden’s Brennan Oleynichak launched the discus 160 feet for a commanding victory, and Colfax Ridgeview’s Noah Hastings cleared a season-best 1.77 meters to win the high jump.
