Jerseyville Dominates Relays, Cruises to Carlinville Girls Invitational Title

The Jerseyville track and field program put on a clinic in teamwork and depth on Friday, April 10, running away with the team championship at the Carlinville Girls Invitational.

Winning three of the four relay events and picking up crucial individual titles across the track and field, the Panthers amassed 130 team points. They comfortably outpaced the host Carlinville Cavaliers, who finished second with 87 points, and the third-place Litchfield Purple Panthers (86).

Jerseyville’s dominance was most evident in the baton exchanges. The Panthers’ 4×100 relay team of Riley Thornton, KaleyJo Gibson, Julia West, and Belle Peuterbaugh set the tone early with a winning time of 53.09. West and Peuterbaugh then teamed up with Madisyn Burch and Morgan Allen to capture the 4×200 relay in 1:52.52. Jerseyville completed their relay trifecta in the 4×400, where Courtney Breden, Makenna Brunaugh, Allen, and Amelia Jumper crossed the finish line first in 4:24.68.

The Panthers also received stellar individual contributions. Peuterbaugh secured a victory in the 200-meter dash (27.15), while Jumper added a first-place finish in the 800 meters, clocking a personal-best 2:27.45. In the hurdles, Neely Goetten earned gold in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a season-best 51.41. Morgan Allen matched her relay success in the field, winning the high jump with a clearance of 1.62 meters.

Despite Jerseyville’s runaway victory, the host Carlinville Cavaliers gave the home crowd plenty to celebrate, largely thanks to the overwhelming power of Payton Harding. Harding dominated the throwing rings, winning the shot put with a toss of 11.27 meters and unleashing a personal-best heave of 40.12 meters to claim the discus title by more than five meters. Carlinville also found success in the distance events, as the 4×800 relay quartet of Hannah Truax, Madeline Murphy, Sylvee Gibbs, and Halle Bredel blew away the competition, winning by nearly 48 seconds with a time of 10:44.73.

Litchfield earned its third-place team finish through strong distance and hurdle performances. Freshman Maggie Schwab paced the field in the 3200 meters, taking gold with a time of 12:30.89, while adding a runner-up finish in the 1600 meters.

Springfield Lutheran’s Ainsley Johnson claimed the title of the meet’s fastest sprinter, winning the 100-meter dash in a season-best 12.79. Her teammate, Lydia Woody, showcased her endurance by winning the 1600 meters in 5:28.42.

Other notable individual triumphs on the track included Mt. Olive’s Alena Graham, who broke the one-minute mark to win the 400 meters in 59.84, and Winchester’s Maci Peterson, who won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.90.

In the field events, Gillespie’s Ella Brawner cleared 3.20 meters to win the pole vault. Bunker Hill’s Zoey Watkins leaped 4.38 meters to edge out Mt. Olive’s Bella Lueken for the long jump crown, and Roxana’s Leah Newton took home gold in the triple jump with a mark of 9.54 meters.
