Jersey Baseball Answers Early Deficit, Powers Past Litchfield 9-4
The Jersey varsity baseball team shook off an early deficit and flexed its offensive muscle on Wednesday afternoon, defeating visiting Litchfield 9-4 in a non-conference matchup at Jersey Community Middle School. After falling behind in the opening frame, Jersey (8-2) erupted for eight combined runs in the second and third innings to seize permanent control of the game.
Litchfield (6-5) came out swinging in the top of the first inning, putting up three quick runs to put the home team on its heels. Jersey managed to answer with a single run in the bottom half of the frame, but the visitors still held a 3-1 advantage heading into the second.
That lead quickly evaporated. Jersey’s bats caught fire in the bottom of the second, orchestrating a massive five-run rally. The outburst flipped the script, turning a two-run deficit into a 6-3 lead and shifting the momentum entirely to the home dugout.
The offensive surge continued in the bottom of the third. Jersey pushed across three additional runs, extending its lead to a commanding 9-3.
From there, the game settled into a pitching and defensive battle. Both squads traded zeros on the scoreboard through the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings as the respective defenses clamped down. Litchfield managed to scratch across one final run in the top of the seventh, but the early damage was too much to overcome, sealing the 9-4 victory for Jersey.
With the win, Jersey improves its impressive home record to 5-1 on the season, while Litchfield moves to 4-4 on the road.
