Mt. Pulaski Outlasts Litchfield 7-6 in Eight-Inning Thriller

The Mt. Pulaski varsity baseball team secured a hard-fought victory on Saturday, outlasting non-conference visitor Litchfield in a dramatic 7-6, eight-inning contest. After battling back and forth all afternoon, Mt. Pulaski plated the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to send the home crowd away happy.

The game was an offensive seesaw from the opening pitch. Litchfield started strong, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning, but Mt. Pulaski immediately answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half. The Purple Panthers jumped ahead again with two runs in the second, putting the pressure back on the hosts.

Mt. Pulaski’s offense found its rhythm in the middle innings, pushing across two runs in the third to tie the game at 4-4. After Litchfield scratched across a single run in the top of the fourth, Mt. Pulaski responded with two more in the bottom half to take their first lead of the day at 6-5.

Litchfield’s lineup was paced by Laidyn Jones, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, and Mathew Bywater, who collected two hits, an RBI, and wreaked havoc on the basepaths with three stolen bases. Max Leitschuh also tallied two hits and drove in a run for the visitors.

Trailing by a run late, Litchfield managed to manufacture the tying run in the top of the seventh inning, forcing the game into extras. However, the Purple Panthers were held scoreless in the top of the eighth, setting the stage for Mt. Pulaski’s walk-off heroics in the bottom half.

On the mound, Litchfield saw a strong relief performance from Ethan Saathoff, who allowed just one run on three hits while striking out two over four innings of work. Leitschuh started the game for Litchfield, striking out four over three innings. Despite Litchfield’s flawless defense—committing zero errors on the day—Mt. Pulaski’s timely hitting in the clutch proved to be the difference.
