Flawless Defense and Saathoff’s Arm Lift Litchfield Past Taylorville, 3-2

The Litchfield varsity baseball team bounced back in a major way on Tuesday afternoon, relying on rock-solid pitching and a flawless defensive performance to edge visiting Taylorville 3-2 in a non-conference clash.

A day after being no-hit, the Purple Panthers made the most of their offensive opportunities and played a remarkably clean game in the field to secure the home victory. Litchfield committed zero errors on the day and turned a pair of crucial double plays to back up their pitching staff.

Senior right-hander Ethan Saathoff got the starting nod for Litchfield and delivered a brilliant performance to earn the win. Saathoff carved through the Taylorville lineup over five innings of work, striking out seven batters while scattering five hits. He allowed just one earned run and two walks over his 75-pitch outing.

Taylorville struck first, scratching across a run in the top of the first inning. However, Litchfield answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame to knot the game at 1-1. The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Litchfield capitalized on a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead that they would never relinquish.

Senior Max Leitschuh was the offensive catalyst for the Panthers. He went 1-for-2 at the plate with a double, a walk, a stolen base, a run scored, and an RBI. Seniors Mathew Bywater and Kaiden Law provided the team’s other two hits, with Bywater also adding a run and a stolen base. Sophomore Ryker Witt utilized his speed to manufacture a run, scoring and stealing a base after reaching via a hit-by-pitch. Senior Laidyn Jones also chipped in with a vital RBI.

Taylorville attempted to rally late, plating a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. But Jones, who took over on the mound in relief of Saathoff, slammed the door shut. The senior recorded the save by tossing the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one to preserve the hard-fought victory.

Defensively, Leitschuh was a vacuum at first base, recording a game-high 10 putouts. T. Pastrovich added four putouts and an assist in the field as the Panthers’ defense thwarted multiple Taylorville threats.
