Leitschuh’s All-Around Performance Lifts Litchfield Past Springfield 7-6 in Extra Innings

The Litchfield varsity baseball team outlasted Springfield in an eight-inning, non-conference battle on Saturday afternoon, securing a 7-6 road victory behind a phenomenal two-way effort from senior Max Leitschuh.

Litchfield controlled the early momentum, capitalizing on strong starting pitching and timely hitting to build a comfortable advantage. The Purple Panthers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning, pushing three runs across the plate. They extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth, but a resilient Springfield squad was far from finished.

After being held in check for four innings by Litchfield starter Mathew Bywater—who tossed four scoreless frames, allowing just two hits and striking out four—the Senators’ offense finally came alive in the bottom of the fifth. Springfield manufactured a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 5-2, setting the stage for a dramatic sixth inning.

Trailing by three, Springfield erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to completely erase the deficit and take a 6-5 lead. The Senators took advantage of a shaky Litchfield defense that committed four errors on the day, resulting in five unearned runs. Junior Karter Marks provided the biggest swing for the hosts, launching a solo home run. Brody Scheffler also contributed a clutch two-RBI performance to fuel the comeback, while Liam Watts added a pair of hits, including a double.

Down to their final three outs, Litchfield responded in the top of the seventh. The Panthers manufactured the game-tying run to force extra innings, leaning heavily on Leitschuh to carry the load.

Leitschuh was virtually unstoppable at the plate, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. The senior went a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and three runs scored. After scoring the tying run, Leitschuh then stepped up on the mound to hold the Senators at bay. He pitched three innings in relief, allowing three runs—none of them earned—while striking out four to earn the win.

In the top of the eighth, Litchfield pushed across the decisive run against Springfield reliever Carter Beck, utilizing excellent plate discipline to seal the 7-6 victory. Titan Hires and Ryker Witt each added an RBI to aid the Panthers’ offensive attack.

Despite the loss, Springfield saw a strong relief outing from freshman Jacob Scheffler, who kept his team in the contest by tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out four.
