Board Approves Redesigned Educator Evaluation System Moving to March Timeline
Litchfield Board of Education Meeting | February 17, 2026
Article Summary: The Litchfield School Board approved a redesigned educator evaluation system that streamlines performance components and shifts the evaluation timeline to a March-to-March cycle. The new system is designed to foster deeper professional conversations and growth among staff.
Evaluation System Key Points:
-
Timeline Shift: The evaluation cycle will move from an August-March timeline to a March-to-March timeline to allow more time for observation and growth.
-
Streamlined Focus: The rubric was narrowed from 22 components to 13 to allow for more in-depth professional development conversations.
-
Collaboration: The redesign was a joint effort between the administration and the Litchfield Education Association (LEA).
-
Compliance: The updates reflect recent changes in state law regarding student growth, tenure, and retirement.
The Litchfield Community Unit School District #12 Board of Education on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, voted to adopt a redesigned educator evaluation system following collaboration between the administration and the teachers’ union.
Superintendent Dr. Kelly McClain presented the proposal, noting that the update was necessary to reflect recent changes in state law regarding student growth and tenure. However, the district took the opportunity to refine the tool to better serve staff development.
“The goal for this system still remains growth and professional development with our staff,” McClain said.
A significant change in the new system is the reduction of evaluation components from 22 down to 13. McClain explained that this narrowing of focus allows administrators and teachers to have more in-depth, reflective conversations rather than trying to cover too many areas superficially.
Additionally, the district is shifting its evaluation calendar. Historically, evaluations took place between August and March. The new system will operate on a March-to-March timeline.
“That’ll just give additional time for both the administrators and the teachers to work through that evaluation process,” McClain said.
The Board approved the plan unanimously via roll call vote.
