The University of Illinois Extension has announced the schedule for the annual Dudley Smith Farm Winter Meeting, inviting the public to explore current agricultural practices and the latest research on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
The meeting will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Christian County Extension Office, located at 1120 N. Webster St. in Taylorville.
This year’s agenda focuses heavily on livestock and environmental stewardship. Travis Meteer, an Extension Commercial Agriculture Educator, will open the session at 9:30 a.m. with a presentation on “Examining Annual Cow Costs and Drivers of Profitability.” He will be followed by Luke Frantz, Director of Business Development at Kapco Futures, who will provide a “Cattle Market Outlook.”
Later in the morning, attendees will hear research updates from the Dudley Smith Initiative. Kristin Greer, a Senior Research Specialist, will discuss the impact of cover crops and fertility treatments on water quality. Assistant Professor Luciano Alves de Oliveira will present on drainage water recycling for crop resilience, and graduate student Grady Gullickson will discuss grazing or harvesting cereal rye in corn-soybean rotations.
The educational portion of the day will conclude with a “Building a Soil Health Legacy” producer panel moderated by Meteer.
