Litchfield Public Library District
A Modern Center for Community & Culture
While Litchfield’s library history dates back to a generous 1904 donation from Andrew Carnegie, the Litchfield Public Library District today operates out of a stunning, modern facility that opened its doors in February 2017. Leaving behind the constraints of the historic Carnegie building (which now houses the Tourism Office), this new 12,000-square-foot center was designed from the ground up to serve the informational, educational, and recreational needs of the 21st century.
The Facility
The building is designed with a “two-wing” layout centered around a custom circulation desk, ensuring a balance between quiet study and active community engagement.
-
The South Wing: This area is dedicated to adult materials and juvenile non-fiction. It features comfortable seating areas for reading, two private study rooms for focused work, and a board room.
-
The North Wing: This side houses the vibrant Children’s Library, designed to foster a love of reading in the next generation. It is also home to the Ross & Mary Lay Community Room, a large multi-purpose space that hosts library programming and is available for private rentals for parties and business events.
For the Visitor & Researcher
Of special interest to travelers and historians is the Jackson-Walker Genealogy Room. Located in the South Wing, this dedicated space allows visitors to trace their family roots in Montgomery County. The library holds a robust collection of over 42,000 items, including books, audiobooks, DVDs, and magazines.
Access & Services
The library serves all residents within the Litchfield Community Unit School District #12, but it also welcomes visitors. Through the reciprocal borrower program, holders of valid Illinois public library cards from other districts can check out materials. The entire facility is fully handicapped accessible, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy the resources comfortably.
