Litchfield Museum & Route 66 Welcome Center

The Gateway to Mother Road History

Located directly on the historic 1930–1940 alignment of the Mother Road, the Litchfield Museum & Route 66 Welcome Center is the essential starting point for your visit. For a small town, this museum packs a “big kick” of history, serving as both a tribute to the highway and a deep dive into the industrial powerhouse that Litchfield once was.

Exhibits & Collections
Visitors are greeted by a diverse array of artifacts that tell the story of the city’s evolution.

  • Route 66 Lore: The museum houses original road signs, an antique automobile, and a fascinating collection of Bob Waldmire maps and drawings—tributes to the road’s most famous itinerant artist.

  • Local Industry: Learn about the Planet Mill, which in 1881 claimed to be the largest and best-equipped steam flour mill in the world before its destruction by fire.

  • Made in Litchfield: Explore the legacy of the American Radiator Company (featuring a 1904 cornerstone and time capsule), the Brown Shoe Company, and the Litchfield Creamery, famous for producing Milnot and Chili Man Chili.

  • Civic History: Don’t miss the Litchfield Fire Department’s antique hand-drawn fire wagon and the comprehensive section honoring area veterans.

A Unique Location
Litchfield is unique in Route 66 history because two different alignments of the road pass through town. The museum sits on the Historic Route 66 (1930–1940), while the later four-lane alignment (1940–1977) ran to the west. The museum guides can help you navigate these “alignments” to ensure you see all the roadside architecture the city has to offer.
