Litchfield Municipal Airport
Your Gateway to the Skies on Route 66
While many travelers explore Route 66 by car, Litchfield is also a premier destination for those arriving by air. Located just two miles southwest of the downtown business district, the Litchfield Municipal Airport (3LF) is a high-quality general aviation facility that sits directly along the historic 1930–1940 alignment of Route 66.
This isn’t just a place to land; it’s a hub of community pride. The airport has been named “Airport of the Year” by the Illinois Division of Aeronautics multiple times (2002, 2004) for its outstanding maintenance and service. It serves as a vital link for business travelers, private pilots, and the Arch Air Medical Service (Arch 2), which bases a critical care helicopter here to serve the region.
For the Visitor & Aviation Enthusiast:
Even if you aren’t a pilot, the airport hosts one of the most exciting annual events in the city. The Route 66 Jets RC Rally, typically held in early September, draws pilots from all over the United States.
This is not your average model plane show—these are large-scale, turbine-powered remote-controlled jets that can reach speeds of 200 mph. The public is invited to watch these miniature marvels roar through the skies, often for free or a nominal entry fee.
