Litchfield Greetings Tour Mural
A Postcard-Perfect Tribute to Route 66
Completed in May 2021, this vibrant street art installation is one of the most photographed spots in Litchfield. Painted by the renowned traveling duo Victor Ving (muralist) and Lisa Beggs (photographer) of the “Greetings Tour,” this mural is part of a nationwide public art project that seeks to bring the classic “large letter” postcard style of the mid-20th century back to life.
Traveling the country in their RV, the artists selected Litchfield as their sixth stop along Historic Route 66. The mural features the name LITCHFIELD in bold, block letters, with each character serving as a frame for a distinct local landmark. Visitors can test their local knowledge by identifying the scenes painted within the letters:
-
The Historic Litchfield Carnegie Library Building
-
The Ariston Café
-
The Wabash Train Depot
-
Shoal Creek Conservation Area
-
Lake Lou Yaeger Recreational Area
Located prominently at the intersection of Route 16 (Union Avenue) and State Street, the mural faces a dedicated parking area, making it safe and easy for road-trippers to pull over and snap the perfect souvenir photo. It stands as a colorful bridge between the city’s historic past and its creative present.
