Litchfield Fire Department

Litchfield Fire Department

Protecting the Community Since 1874

Established in May 1874—originally as the “Eagle Hook and Ladder Company Number One”—the Litchfield Fire Department has a deep history of service. What began with German-speaking volunteers and horse-drawn wagons has evolved into a modern, highly trained force providing fire suppression, advanced life support (EMS), and specialized rescue services.

For the Visitor & Enthusiast
While this is a working fire station and not a public museum, the department is welcoming to the community.

  • Station Tours: The department offers tours of the station and apparatus for groups and families. Note: These are by appointment only and depend on staff availability. Please call the non-emergency line to schedule.

  • History: If you are looking for the department’s antique hand-drawn fire wagon, you won’t find it here—it is proudly displayed at the Litchfield Museum & Route 66 Welcome Center on Historic Route 66.

  • Events: The department typically hosts an Open House in October during Fire Prevention Week, featuring demonstrations, food, and activities for kids.

Services & Capabilities
The department operates out of two stations (Station 1 on Edwards St. and Station 2 on Route 66) and is staffed by a combination of career and volunteer/paid-on-call professionals.

  • Specialized Teams: The department maintains a Dive Team for water rescues (crucial for Lake Lou Yaeger) and a Hazardous Materials response team.

  • EMS: They provide paramedic-level emergency medical services to the city and surrounding region.
